Cardboard Canoe

Total achievements: 13

Define and Brainstorm
The basis of our boat would be to duck tape the crap out of it and seal it completely
Big Brain
There was another idea sheet with tons of scribbles on it but it was way to messy to try to figure out.
Sketch Ideas

Our idea was to have a octagonal or hexagonal base with elongated bow and stern that would meet in a point as to cut the water.
Prototype Ideas
We built a prototype out of manilla folders and masking tape, but it inevitably was lost during the build process, it resembled the 3rd drawing.

Criteria and Constraints
We realized with the pointed design that would be too hard to fabricate with the available cardboard and tape so we decided on a pontoon like boat.

Build It
We started out by sifting through all of the cardboard to find the strongest pieces. After finding the piece that would be our bottom, we started to tape it overlapping the tape in the middle. The tape job was so watertight on the bottom that we didn't fully tape the other side, the part that would be on the interior.

We then constructed the trapezoidal sides and completely duck taped them.

We then fortified the exterior and joint tape job with some pretty heavy duty green tape provided by Monti, and using boat letters named it the S.S Pompa after our b.a football coach
The Early Bird Gets the Achievement
The Farthest
The Longest
Videographer
While not in the boat Thomas filmed the ordeal

Feedback
   The tape job was fantastic
The dimensions of the boat could have been more uniform
   We need a better paddle
Redesign
If we had more time we would need to reenforce the sides and tape the interior comepletely.

Make Your Own Achievement
"Fish Out of Water"- propel your boat one lap without use of a swimmer as a source of propulsion.

Mouse Trap Racecar

Total Achievements: 6

Build It
The first iteration of our racer used a crap ton of string to secure the trap to the chassis (green arrow). We modified a pencil to extend the lever and decided to use a rubber band instead of string (black arrow).
Competitor
The first trial was pretty good, the racer traveled the farthest out of all of the periods though there were some things we needed to change.

Feedback
+The rubber band/ pencil lever extension worked fantastically
Δ The length of the front should be longer for more distance
!Experiment with longer rubber bands and/or more tension
?How can we prevent the longer front from bending?

Re-work
We used two rubber bands under more tension for better acceleration and modified the front
so it would be longer using the metal fischertechnik beams.

Long Distance Winner, Going the Mile
The classroom eventually was not sufficient in length for the racer so we moved to a longer hallway in the CoSA building and traveled 792 cm or ~8 m!
